I Dated 6 Strangers to Find My Perfect Coffee Order
I've been ordering the same coffee for years, and somewhere along the way I got bored. What if there's a coffee on the menu I should have been drinking this whole time?
So I hired a tux, grabbed six red roses, and went looking for strangers willing to go on a coffee date with me — each one representing one of the most popular coffees you'll find on a cafe menu. Every date got scored out of five on taste, personality, and compatibility, for a maximum of 15. Here's how it went.
The Six Coffee Dates
Date One: The Americano, with Sue

Sue was an absolute gem, completely unfazed by a stranger in a tux handing her a rose. The coffee didn't fare quite as well — "it's got flavor, but it's not very interesting," she said.

Date Four: The Filter Coffee (Batch Brew), with Ben

A professional barista's pick, and one most people wouldn't think to order. Ben called it a superior Americano — just paper, hot water, and honestly brewed coffee, made to be enjoyed as a long drink.

Date Five: The Flat White, with Jake

Jake made a strong case: the right size, silky texture without an overpowering layer of foam, and a double shot that keeps the coffee flavour front and centre. Drinkable in a rush, but just as good if you want to linger.

A no-nonsense finish. Emma called espresso the honest building block of every coffee — nowhere to hide if it's badly made. It turned out surprisingly fruity and citrusy, with real acidity, but as a short, solo drink it's not exactly a social one.

The flat white takes the crown on a near-perfect score — balanced milk texture, a proper hit of coffee flavour, and the right size to enjoy in a rush or with a friend. Yes, it might sound like an obvious winner for a coffee roaster, but every date went in with an open mind, and every coffee had a genuine chance to shine.

Every single coffee had a surprise in it — the strength of a cappuccino, the unexpected citrusy burst of an espresso, the presentation of a good-looking latte. The real lesson isn't which coffee wins; it's that you won't know your favourite until you actually try them all.
